Confession. I like sugar. I like it a lot, a lot. I'm not really your typical health coach/personal trainer/nutritional counselor, whatever you want to call me. I go out to dinner with friends and they're sitting there thinking I'm totally judging them when it comes time to order. (Meanwhile, I'm like, don't judge me, I like sugar.) I don't judge. Many times there is a flush of relief at the table when the waiter comes to ask if we'd like to see the dessert menu, and everyone sort of does that look around the table like, who's gonna say yes first, should I hold out? There's a health coach/trainer/nutritional counselor at the table, what do I do? She's totally going to judge me! Should I look at her and... no, no, I'm not going to say anything, even though I desperately want dessert... oh wait, she's going to say something... and I'm like, what took you so long to ask?
Confession #2. I order dessert.
Despite my affinity for sugar, I somewhat happen to have it under control, thankfully. I do have a touch of chocolate almost every day, but there isn't a time when you will see me walking around with those mega Starbucks cups of liquid sugar bombs in hand. I like passion tea. Unsweetened, thank you very much (and there is said "under control"). However, there comes a season (summer) that kinda, sorta begs for the occasional glass of something other than water or sparkling water. There's ice coffee I realize, which I thoroughly enjoy (sans sugar), but sometimes I need a little more. (I'll get to you later you buttery Chard.) Summer and lemonade to me are life-long buddies. They take me back... to my 20's when I used to hit the Jersey Shore with my Snapple Lemonade with Vodka. (Something tells me I'm sharing too much now...)
I really like lemonade. So in honor of summer, and the fact that I'm now a mom with two little energetic dudes who could do without the influx of sugar that comes from pretty much any store-bought lemonade, I am making my own. And yes, it does have sugar in it, but the amount is controlled, by me, and I'm quite reasonable despite my affinity. (Because I have two boys. Did I mention energetic too?)
Care for the recipe?
1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice (that's about 5 lemons - you can handle that, roll your sleeves up and use a little elbow grease.)
4 cups of filtered water (c'mon, you still use tap?)
1/4 cup raw turbinado sugar (I think that's fancy for "sugar") Or you can use honey - for a slightly different type of sweetness... or I'd even give good old maple syrup a go, why not? You're the boss of your sugar domain.
Mix it all up, pop in a crazy straw and enjoy summer just like in the good old days... at the Shore ;)
